Welcome Back to the Rainbow Quilt Block of the Month designed by Janome Maker Carolina Oneto! You are almost through the whole quilt!
Rainbow Quilt Block 12 Card Trick
This month we will make our last block. I can’t believe that we arrived at the final block! But we have a lot to do before we finish this rainbow quilt! Next month you will receive the cutting instructions to add sashing to assembly all the twelve blocks!
The Card Trick Patchwork Block is a 9-patch block with three rows of three squares each. The center square has four quarter-square triangles. The corner squares are made from two half-square triangles. The center side squares are comprised of two quarter-square triangles and one half-square triangle. This block uses a background fabric and 4 contrasting fabrics.
Remember that all the blocks will have a finished size of 12” so that means the unfinished size will be 12 1/2”
Fabrics:
White background
- Two 5 1/4” squares
- Two 4 7/8” squares
Red
- One 5 1/4” square
- One 4 7/8” square
Orange

Yellow

- One 4 7/8” squares
Fuschia

Instructions for making HST
Cut each square by half. Create a total of 8 HST sewing together a white triangle with a colored triangle (4 HST will be created using triangles that came from the 5 1/4” squares and the other 4 HST came from the 4 7/8” squares)
INSTRUCTIONS FOR Assemble the 3-patch QSTs
To make these you'll need triangles sub-cut from both sizes of squares. These edges are both bias. Do not pull on the patches as you stitch. Just guide them and let the sewing machine do the work.
The half-squares triangles that you made from the 5 1/4” squares have to be cut diagonally so one half will be sewn with a color half leftover from the remaining 4 7/8”. You will get 4 blocks which final size is 4 1/2”
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE QUARTER SQUARE TRIANGLES
- To make a QST take the colored triangles that are left from the 5 1/4” squares and place them right sides together and sew them with a 1/4” seam.
- Use a pencil or water-soluble marker and draw a line from corner to corner, bisecting both HST seams.
- Using an acrylic quilter’s ruler and rotary cutter, cut along the pencil line.
- Sew together two half, matching the center seams to create the central block
- Trim the block to a 4 1/2” square
FINAL ASSEMBLY
- Arrange your blocks in correct layout
- Using a quarter-inch seam allowance, sew together in rows. Join all rows, using a quarter-inch seam allowance.
- Press your completed block and trim down to 12.5″ square (if necessary).
And that’s all!
I hope you enjoy this new block! And don’t forget to share it!
