Customizer 11000 - What is Hoop Mode? What is Layout Mode?

When Customizer 11000 first opens, you see a screen with a box on it. The box is a representation of the sewing area of the ST hoop, which is the default hoop. It is the same representation of the sewing area as you see on the plastic grid that comes with the hoop.

Whenever you see a representation of a hoop, you are in Hoop Mode

Note: the hoop representation is shown with centerlines, which divides the sewing area into four quadrants. If you prefer to not view the centerlines, click View, Centerline, White Lineto change the lines from black to white. The screen will only show the sewing area perimeter

There is an information bar on the bottom of the screen which provides facts about the screen. The information bar tells us which mode we are in, the hoop shown on the screennumber of stitches in the design on the screennumber of colors in the design on the screenthe magnification level, and the thread brand chosen

Let's open a design to see what shows on the information bar when you have a design on the screen. (Please refer to Lesson #1 Opening an Existing Design.)

Open the design Pansy1 in the Flowers folder.

The information bar now tells us:

  • Hoop Mode
  • ST Hoop
  • 2193 stitches
  • 4 colors (called Layers on the information bar)
  • 100% magnification
  • Janome Thread
When Customizer 11000 is in Hoop Mode, you are looking at the how the design is positioned in the hoop.

The design is automatically centered in the hoop when it is opened. If you were to transfer the design to the MC11000, the design will transfer to sew in the center of the hoop.

Click on the design. A selection box will form around it. Without lifting your finger from the mouse button, drag it to the upper left quadrant

If you were to transfer the design to the MC11000 now, the design will transfer to sew in the upper left part of the hoop.

Note: for those of you who previously used Customizer 10000 Plus: the EasyImport program was entirely in Hoop Mode.

When we open a design using the Open icon or through the menu entries File, Open…, the design will be sized to the appropriate hoop for the Memory Craft 11000. If the design will sew in the ST hoop, the design will show on the screen in the ST hoop. If the design is larger than can sew in the ST hoop, the SQ hoop will open.

To see what happens when we open a large design, we opened design R85 from the Redwork Collection CD. This design is too large for the ST hoop, so it opened in the SQ hoop.

When you use the open process to open a .jef or .jef+ file, a new screen is created showing the design in the appropriately sized hoop. Any design that was on the screen will disappear when a new design is opened.

Layout Mode
We can change the screen to create design layouts. (If you are unsure what a layout is, please see lesson #3 Creating an Embroidery Layout under the Customizer 10000/Plus Easy Edit category.) Instead of seeing a hoop on the screen, you see a sheet of printer paper.

To change the screen to Layout Mode, click the New icon

OR
Click File, New

The Select Hoop/Sheets dialog will appear.

Click Layout

A representation of a sheet of printer paper will show on the screen.

Note: You have the ability to choose to see the paper in Landscape orientation or in Portrait Orientation.

Note: for those of you who previously used Customizer 10000 Plus: the EasyEdit program was entirely in Layout Mode.

Note: the representation of the sheet of paper is shown with centerlines, which divides the layout area into four quadrants. If you prefer to not view the centerlines, click View, Centerline, White Lineto change the lines from black to white. The screen will only show the layout area perimeter. You may prefer to view it without the centerlines to visualize a sheet of printer paper.

The information bar provides some new information:

  • We are in Layout Mode
  • The hoop is set to the SQ hoop for combining designs together. This is the largest hoop, so it would create the fewest number of hoopings.
  • We are seeing one sheet of paper across and one sheet of paper down. (We have the ability to see up to three across and three down.)
  • There are no designs in the layout
  • The screen is shown at 100% magnification
  • Thread is set to Janome brand

Let's open a layout to see what shows on the information bar.

OpenTemplate2(A4).clf inthe 3.Layout folder.

Click View, Overview to see the entire layout. View, Overview will reduce the magnification of the design on the screen so you can see all four sheets of printer paper. It will not resize the design.

The information bar now shows us:

  • Layout Mode
  • Combine hoop is set to ST (standard) hoop
  • There are two sheets of paper across and two sheets down
  • There are 17 separate embroidery designs in the layout
  • It is at 71% magnification
  • Thread is set to Janome brand

If we were to transfer this layout to the MC11000, we would transfer 17 separate embroidery designs, each one needing a separate hooping.

Click Edit, Change Layout Size...

However, we could combine several designs together to minimize the number of hoopings. If we change the Combine hoop to SQ, we have the largest hoop to combine with.

The Change Number of Sheets dialog will appear.
Click the down arrow in the Hoop Size box. Click Hoop SQ. Click OK

Notice that the Hoop size changed on the information bar:

To combine designs using the large SQ hoop, click the Combine icon

or

click Edit, Combine.

The entire layout will gray out and you will see a dotted line box, usually in the upper left of the screen. This box represents the SQ hoop.

By clicking on the combine box and dragging it over embroideries in the layout, they will show color when they fit entirely within the hoop. When you lift your finger off the mouse button, you will get a confirm box asking if you want to combine these designs into one hooping.

Click Yes to combine the designs.

Continue to combine designs around the layout until you have created six hoopings from the original 17.
