Off-the-Shoulder Dress

Instructions

Join Caroline and make this Beginner-friendly off-the-shoulder dress this week! It’s perfect for a quick upcoming holiday dress!

Use a fabric that drapes well, or has a little bit of a sheen to it for beautiful results!

Instructions:

  1. Cut two pieces of fabric that measure 36″ long x 30″ tall
  2. Sew up the sides with right sides together
  3. From the top corners, measure DOWN 6.5″ and TOWARDS CENTER 3″. Cut at an angle.
  4. Cut two sleeve pieces that measure 15″ wide x 9.5″ tall. Align one short edge with the angled edge you just cut. Line up at the top and sew to the end of the dress armhole. Repeat on the other side and again for the other sleeve.
  5. Finish the sleeves off by sewing the remainder of the sleeve length together with right sides facing. Hem the sleeves by folding the bottom raw edge towards the wrong side at 1/4″ and again at 1/4″ and topstitching in place.
  6. Cut two 36.5″ wide x 10″ tall strips for the ruffle. Align them with right sides together and sew up the short sides. Hem the ruffle by folding the bottom raw edge towards the wrong side at 1/4″ and again at 1/4″ and topstitching in place.
  7. Align the ruffle to the top of the dress – right sides of both facing up. Stitch around the top of the dress/ruffle at 1/4″. You could even use your serger for this step!
  8. Fold the sewn top edge towards the wrong side at 1/2″ and sew in place leaving 2″-3″ open to insert elastic. Measure the elastic around your shoulders to find a good fit: not too loose, but not too tight! Using a safety pin, thread the elastic all the way through the casing. When the two ends meet, sew them together. Finish sewing the casing so there is not longer a hole.
  9. Hem the dress to your liking!
