Instructions

Pattern Instructions:

-Print both the pattern layout sheets and the reversed for tracing sheets. Tape the pages together, using the cross marks to help align the pages.

Click here for the Pattern Placement Guide.
Click Here for the Reversed Tracing Pattern.

The appliqué pieces are number 1 through 21 and are to be fused to the background in numerical order.
The pieces are also color coded as listed below.

DG: Darkest Green – (pieces 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10)
MG: Medium Green – (pieces 12 and 14)
LG: Lightest Green – (pieces 9 and 15)
LLB: Lightest Blue – (pieces 13 and 16)
LB: Second Lightest Blue – (pieces 6, 7, 8 and 19)
MB: Medium Blue – (piece 20)
DB: Dark Blue – (piece 18)
DDB: Darkest Blue – (pieces 11 and 17)
NB: Navy Blue – (pieces 16a, 17a, 18a, 19a and 20a)
DY: Dark Yellow – (piece 21)

Appliqué instructions:

  1. Trace all the pieces from the reversed pattern sheets onto fusible web. (Label each with its corresponding number as you go.) Cut roughly around the outside of the traced lines.
  2. Following web manufacturer’s instructions, fuse the templates to the wrong side of the fabrics indicated in the chart above. Let cool, then cut out the appliqué pieces on the lines. Peel the backing paper off each piece just as you are ready to fuse it to the background.
  3. Place the placement guide underneath the 14" x 19" piece of background fabric on your ironing board. You should be able to see the lines through your white fabric. With the iron, lightly tack each appliqué piece in number order to the background. (Please note: 16a is fused right after 16, 17a after 17, etc.) When all the pieces are tacked into position, slide the paper pattern out and completely fuse the appliqué.
  4. Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse the piece of non-woven lightweight fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the background fabric. This will help keep your appliqué stitches nice and neat.
  5. Stitch the appliqué in place using Foot F2. Play around and have fun with the stitching.
  • I used silver thread and a single straight stitch about 1/16th of an inch inside the blue flower shapes, then used the 12 weight blue thread to “outline” the shapes – stitching immediately on the outside of each blue flower shape.
  • I used a very small satin stitch in two different variegated greens around the edges of the dark green stems and leaves, then again stitched an “outline” with the 12 weight green immediately on the outside edges after the satin stitches were completed. (A hint about satin stitching, always pivot with the needle on the outside edge of the shape – see the detail photo.)
  • Another little hint when stitching appliqué – if you want to be really fussy, use a large eyed needle to draw the threads through to the back of the fabric and tie off by hand. It is fussy, but it really looks good.

Embroidery Instructions:

  1. Using the placement guide underneath the appliquéd quilt, mark the lines where the embroidery will be located. (I like a marking pen that irons off, rather than washes off.)
  2. Hoop and embroider motif 19 with silver thread, following machine instructions. Use the additional tear away stabilizer for this embroidery and tear off the excess when done.
  3. When the embroidery is finished, use the F2 open toe appliqué foot and a 2.2 straight stitch to outline the butterfly with 12 weight blue thread. This makes the silver butterfly stand out more prominently.

Quilting and Finishing:

  1. Layer the backing batting and quilt.
  2. Use darning foot PD-H and free motion quilt the project. When the quilting is complete, trim the project to measure 10" x 15".
  3. Turn under and press ¼" on one short edge of the 10" x 14½" fabric for the back pocket. Stitch it down with a 1/8" seam.
  4. Place the pocket, fabric right side up, on the back of the quilt. Match edges at the top and sides of the quilt, positioning the hem toward the bottom of the quilt. Baste the pocket to the quilt a little less than ¼" away from the edge.

  5. Using the ¼" foot O, sew on the single fold binding to the quilt. Finish the binding on the back by hand or machine.
  6. Insert the 9¼" x 14½" poster board into the back pocket and display the finished quilt on a photo easel.

Around the Table Dresden Placemats
Saturday, December 17, 2016

I like the concept, but the directions are "sloppy." Nowhere in the supply list does it mention the felt or the batting (how much?). Also, I would never use a high loft batting in a placemat, or a table runner, as I think that it would be too unstable for a glass. The next time I make these, I will cut out the batting (I use flannel) and spray baste it to the wrong side of the Dresden plate before I put the Dresden plate on the felt to cut out. I have not yet washed the finished placemat, and am hoping that the single layer of felt does not curl up, or become distorted after washing/drying.

Teatime Quilted Tablecloth
Friday, February 24, 2017

I made this today but your cutting directions need to be changed. You only need 4 of color 1 and color 3 4.5 squares for the triangles. Also the inner border, you only need 2 cuts as WOF is long enough to cut each in half to fit the sides.

Great Machine
Wednesday, August 30, 2017

I've had this machine for only a week now. I bought it used from a lady who makes her own clothes, but she no longer needed the machine. During the purchase, she noted that she is almost sad that it's better to give it away because of how well the machine performed. (I also bought it along side a computerized machine of another brand.} She demoed the machine for us, showing it worked and gave us everything (including the box it came in!) She took amazing care of this machine. I have used it a few times now, and the directions for threading were easy to follow (albeit my hands are quite large so the lower looper was a pain, but that is no fault to the machine or brand.) And I recommend this machine to anyone who wants to learn to serge and wants a machine that can grow with them. I will happily use this machine time and time again.

S9 Review
Sunday, February 25, 2018

I love, love, love my S9! It's sews and embroiders beautifully and it's simplicity of use amazes me. I would recommend this machine for both a beginner and an experienced seamstress. If I would ask anything of Janome it would be to upgrade the programming to run a larger hoop size. I understand that it can't get much wider but there is most definitely room for it to go longer. That is the only limitation of this machine.

I purchased a Memorycraft 15000 a few years ago and it was the best purchase I ever made! This machine can do just about anything you would would ever want! I love the capability of using the Acuedit app to set up my embroidery pattern on my Ipad and then download it to the machine! I love how my embroidery looks upon completion and I love all the good lighting it has to light up your workspace. That way you don’t need to worry about where to set up your machine. It also has plenty of room to do machine embroidery on any size quilts! There are many decorative stitches from which to choose that are outstanding! It’s hard to choose which one to use! There are so many great features it is hard to decide what I love the most. If you want to buy only one machine to last a lifetime, I would recommend this one!

S9 Review
Sunday, February 24, 2019

The S9 is amazing. I learned to sew by hand when I was just 5 and in my grandmothers way as she was quilting. I took seeing classes in high school until they would no longer let me sign up. The S9 makes me appreciate my current skills as well as motivate me to want to learn more. This machine is awesome.

My Janome Horizon Memory Craft 15000 is fantastic! I love, love, love this machine! When I came across the Eye for and Eye embroidery design today, I wanted to make it. However, the embroidery file is missing. Nothing downloads when I select the download button. Please help!

Treat Bag fun!
Monday, August 16, 2021

I made the Halloween treat bag for my new granddaughter and I’m sure it will last for years. No embroidery machine so I appliquéd the lettering. Need a little more skirt fabric for a better gathered look, and I used thin double-bias tape for the skirt hem, over edge stitch on skirt sides. I’m pleased with my results!

I want to say thank you for teaching me this method of applique. I was able to do it with a small letters. This method is the best so far from all of those I've seen and tried.

So useful
Thursday, November 30, 2023

I'd like to express my gratitude for teaching me this appliqué method. I successfully applied it with small letters, and, so far, it's the most effective among all the methods I've seen and tried.
