"Joy" Lumbar Pillow

Step 1: Prepare Your Fabric

1. Cut the pillow base fabric:

○    Cut one piece of fabric 17 x 27 inches (this includes a ½-inch seam allowance on all sides).

○    Press the fabric to remove any wrinkles.

2. Create the letters:

○    Sketch your letters on fusible interfacing or print out large templates to trace.

○    Fuse the interfacing to the back of your fabric scraps following the manufacturer's instructions.

○    Cut out the letters carefully.

Step 2: Assemble the Patchwork

1. If you’re making patchwork letters, sew smaller fabric scraps together to form a larger piece. Press the seams open to reduce bulk.
2. Trace your letters onto the patchwork fabric and cut them out.

Step 3: Attach the Letters

1. Arrange your letters on the pillow base fabric. Play around with placement until you're happy with the layout.
2. Use pins or a fabric glue stick to temporarily secure the letters in place.

Step 4: Appliqué the Letters

1. Select a decorative stitch on your Janome sewing machine. I chose a zigzag stitch for added texture and visual interest.
2. Stitch around the edges of each letter, ensuring they’re securely attached to the pillow base.
3. Trim any loose threads.

Step 5: Sew the Pillow

1. Prepare the back piece:

○    Cut a second piece of fabric 17 x 27 inches for the back.

○    Alternatively, create an envelope closure by cutting two pieces: one 17 x 18 inches and the other 17 x 12 inches. Hem one edge of each piece by folding ½ inch, pressing, and stitching.

2. Assemble the pillow:

○    Place the front and back pieces right sides together.

○    Sew around all sides with a ½-inch seam allowance, leaving a small opening (if not using an envelope closure).

3. Turn the pillow right side out:

○    Trim the corners to reduce bulk and turn the pillow cover right side out.

○    Use a pointed tool to push out the corners neatly.

○    Press the seams.

Step 6: Finish

1. Insert the pillow form into the cover.
2. If you left an opening, hand-stitch it closed using a ladder stitch for a seamless finish.
