My project this season was to recreate Wirt, the eldest brother, who dons a cape from the American Civil War and a Santa Hat (but he cuts off the white fluffy bits). However, I redesigned his look to fit in with everyone else in the show. I also love story telling so we are going to embroider story telling elements from the show: pumpkins, birds, stars, whimsical clouds, owls, black cats, etc.
MY MACHINE: Janome Skyline S9
You don’t need this specific machine, but you will need a Janome machine that can embroider.
EMBROIDERING THE CAPE:
By this time with your embroidery machine, you should already know how to use the embroidery function. If not, then save this project for later because you’ll need a lot of patience.
With this project, you can explore mixing designs together. I use the same 5+ preset designs plus about 3 design files I imported via USB drive on the side of the machine.
Explore changing the design size, rotations, and colors. I’m using one color on machine, so the machine wouldn’t have to notify me to change threads when I’ve no intention of using various colors. Every now and then, I would mix different threads, gold cotton and gold metallic, to create depth.
Be sure to use the grid provided to make sure everything aligns properly, this is an enormous help to me.
I embroidered the cape pre-lining so my lining would be clean.
EMBROIDERING THE HAT:
After adding interface and lining the hat, I embroidered my red hat with red and brown threads. Unlike the navy cotton twill cape with gold threads, I wanted my hat designs to be subtle with minimal depth.
It will be difficult to add the hat to the embroidery hoop because of its thickness, but this was a choice I made. You can choose to do it like the cape to make it easier.
This is the perfect othertimely look for the latter half of autumn into winter and I hope you find your plate of potatoes & molasses!
