Easy Sew Pennant Garland

I love festive, handmade touches and my flannel pennant garland is a great project even for beginner sewists.

I’m using Art Gallery Fabrics in Nesting Garden Ivory for mine.  I wanted a summer, woodland theme for my daughter’s birthday.  But I think this also would be fantastic in a buffalo plaid for a fall-themed party!

Here is what you will need to make yours.

Fabric and Notions Required

– This template (click here to download)

– Flannel fabric.  You can easily cut 8 pennants from a half yard, or make it scrappy and use a different fabric for every pennant!

– Twine or cord

– Pinking shears or a pinking rotary blade

Instructions

-Pre-wash fabric if desired.

-Begin by downloading the template and cutting it out.  You can trace the pattern to a piece of light cardboard or a plastic template for a sturdier template. Cereal boxes are a great, inexpensive option to use for template material.

You can then trace the template onto the pattern or cut around the template, using pinking shears or the pinking rotary blade.

-Fold over the straight edge (top of the pennant) down about 3/4” and then again one more time to create a pocket for the twine.

Press the pocket down.  Repeat for all the pennants.

-Take the pennants to your sewing machine.  Sew a stitch 1/8” away from the bottom edge of the fold.  Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end.

-Trim away the dog ears if desired.

-Using twine or ribbon of your choice, use a safety pin to thread the twine through the pockets.

-Knot the ends of your twine and voila!  You have a pennant garland you can customize to any theme.  I think it would even be cute to embroider letters to spell a name or word.  What do you think?
