1. Prepare the Pieces
First, cut one of the 3" pieces of fusible interfacing in half diagonally, cutting out a triangle.
Then, fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of one "outside" fabric piece.
Fold one of the fabric squares in half diagonally to form a triangle. Press the fold with your iron to make the crease sharp. Next, place the interfacing triangle inside the fold and fuse it.
2. Assemble the Pieces
Layer all three pieces of fabric together in the following order:
- Lay the outside fabric square right side up.
- Next, place the folded triangle on top, lining up the corner of the triangle with one of the corners of the fabric square below it.
- Then, place the other square on top of this, with its right side facing down, so that you can see the fusible interfacing on the outside.
Pin or use binding clips to keep all the layers in place.
3. Sew Around the Edges
Using a ¼" seam allowance, sew around the edges of the square, leaving a gap (about 2 inches) on one side for turning it right side out. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the stitches.
Trim the corners, being careful not to cut into the seam. This will help reduce bulk and make your corners look neater when turned inside out.
4. Turn Inside Out
Carefully turn the bookmark right side out through the gap. Use a point-turner or another pointed object, like the end of a pen, to push out the corners.
Fold in the raw edges of the gap, and if needed, give the bookmark a good press to help the fabric lay flat.
5. Topstitch
Topstitch around the entire edge of the bookmark, with a ⅛" seam. This gives the bookmark a more finished look and closes the gap used for turning.
For this step, I used my HP foot with the straight-stitch needle plate, which places the needle at the ⅛" hole.
6. Press and Enjoy
Give the bookmark one final press to make it nice and flat. Now, slide the bookmark over the corner of a page in your book, and enjoy!
As you can see, this is a quick and easy project that can add a personal touch to any reading experience! It's perfect for using up your scraps and for quick stocking stuffers!
