Birthday Crowns

Hi there! It’s Fran from Cotton and Joy, and today, I’m here to share a fun project for kids’ birthdays – and maybe even adults’ birthdays!

This all started a few months ago when my youngest kiddo announced he wanted me to make him a birthday crown. I’m not sure where he got this idea from, but he insisted on it, bringing it up every couple of weeks.

Once it became clear this wasn’t a passing wish, and he did want me to make him a crown, I started drafting the best way to make one for both my kiddos!

After some testing, I came up with my process, and I’ll share it with you below!

Please note there’s also a downloadable pattern available as well as the instructions below.

Instructions

Birthday Crowns – Step by Step

First, cut two rectangles of fabric and one rectangle of medium-weight fusible interfacing measuring 21” x 6”. Then, fuse the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the main fabric.

Next, pin the lining fabric to the main fabric, right sides together.

Mark the crown template five times and cut it to create the crown shape.

Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew around the edges, leaving gaps on either end — backstitch at the beginning and end of your sewing to reinforce the stitches.

Clip each corner and point and clip into the seam allowance at the inner points.

Turn the crown right side out through the gaps. Push out corners and points. Press crown.

Add ribbons to either end, ensuring it’s about 1″ inside the crown.

Topstitch the edges to secure the ribbon and close the gaps.

Optional Embellishments

For my embellishments, I kept it simple with a circle and the number for their birthdays. I traced the circle shape and then used my pinking shears to cut it.

For the numbers, I decided to applique them with my machine. I used Stitch 6 under the Applique menu. For this, I did have to go slow to get the curves just right, but it was worth it in the end!

I added them to the crowns with light fabric glue on the center. I’m hoping I can easily peel these for new numbers next year!

And here are the finished crowns! I hope you enjoy making these for your kiddos!
