Cutting
From each of the rainbow colored scraps, cut:
One 2” x 6 ½” piece
From the white background, cut:
One 6” x 21 1/2” piece
From the outer fabric, cut:
One 6” x 21 1/2” piece
From the contrasting fabric, cut:
Three 1 ½” x 45” strips (for binding and tie)
Instructions
1. Lay out the fourteen 2” x 6 ½” colored pieces in rainbow order. Stitch them together along the long (6 ½”) side to create one long strip.
2. Fold the 21 ½” x 6 ½” piece in half, with WRONG sides together, along the long end. Press.
3. Place the rainbow strip on top of the 6” x 21 1/2” white background piece. Align the bottom raw edge of the rainbow strip with the bottom edge of the background piece, and baste in place along the bottom edge.
4. Stitch in the ditch in the seam between each color, stopping at the fold. Use a very short backstitch to secure the stitches, or use the locking stitch if your machine has this capability.
5. Layer the outer fabric right side down, batting, and rainbow/white background piece right side up. Align all edges and baste together, placing stitch 1/8” from the edge on all sides.
6. Stitch two 1 ½” x 45” binding strips together along the short edge.
7. Fold in half along the long edge, with wrong sides together.
8. Align the raw edge of the binding strips with the raw edge of the outer fabric. Stitch binding in place along all four edges, using a ¼” seam allowance, and mitering the corners.
9. Flip the finished binding edge over to the white/rainbow side, and hand stitch the binding in place.
10. The remaining strip will be used for the tie closure. Fold the short ends of the remaining strip over, with wrong sides together, ½” and press.
11. Next, fold strip in half along the long side, with wrong sides together, and press. Open with wrong side up. Then fold the long edges of the strip, with wrong sides together, toward the center crease. Press in place.
12. Fold the strip in half along the long edge, aligning the pressed edges and press.
13. Stitch all edges closed.
14. Measure 18” from one finished short end. Pin at this location, to the outer side of the crayon roll, aligning the 18” mark with the ditch of the binding. Stitch in place.
15. Insert crayons, roll up, tie, and enjoy!
