DIY Placemat

By: Janome Maker Raven Maureen

Hello, March! Spring is around the corner and like most of you, I like to pack away my winter things for good and do a Spring refresh!

Here’s a quick tutorial on how to make your own placemats to spruce up your dining space for a new season!

Supplies:

  • 1.5 yards of fabric (to make 4)
  • Chalk and sewing pins
  • Foam or batting
  • Interfacing
  • Ruler
  • Ric rac trim (optional)

Step 1:

cut fabric rectangles (2 for each placemat) 13 inches by 17 inches.

Step 2:

cut the same shape with interfacing and batting. Note: interfacing should go on each rectangle. Cut 1 piece of batting per placemat. Attach your interfacing to the fabric.

Step 3:

baste the batting to one of your rectangles for each placemat.

Step 4:

right sides together, sew your rectangles and leave about a 2 inch opening.

Step 5:

Clip your corners and turn your placemat right side out and give a good press. Stitch the closure.

Step 6:

(optional) pin your ric rac trim around the borders of your placemat. Stitch in place.

All done! Let me know if you plan to try this!
