Happy 4th of July from Janome America
Today we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
On the 4th of July, 1776 the Continental Congress signed the document that formally layed out the philosophical reasons for our secession from Great Britain, and the list of grievances against King George III. Written by Thomas Jefferson, this Declaration of Independence is honored as the founding document of America.
But we actually formally broke ties with England two days ealier. And John Adams, a founding father and our second President, was sure that this historic day--July 2nd--would be the day that everyone remembered and celebrated.
Adams wrote to his wife: "I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival."
Oh well. He made a much better President than prophet.
The reason we celebrate our independence on the day the Declaration of Independence was signed is because this docment so eloquently sums up the heart of of American freedom in a single sentence:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Let's remember this as we enjoy our picnics, fireworks, and liberty.

Serger Smarts Poll Results
Serger users win in a landslide!
In a stunning show of power, sewists who say they use their serger all the time and believe "It's a real timesaver" dominated our recent online poll.
OK, maybe it wasn't a scientific sampling and people who use sergers also like to vote in polls. But we're inclinded to agree with the results. Janome sergers really do save sewing time and they can be used in all kinds of projects to give a professional finish.
Even though a serger looks different from a sewing machine, and has 4 times as many needles, it's no reason to be intimidated. Once you get a basic tour of the parts, and understand how it forms different stitches, you can quickly get used to the speed and convenience.

Through her innovative quilting and jewelry, this entrepreneur has found her creative niche.
Kim Lapacek is a professional quilt maker and fabric artist who inspires many quilters through her Persimon Dreams blog, and sells her creations through her successful etsy shop. And then somehow fits it all in with being a mother of three and helping to run the family apple orchard. Kim quilts with a Janome Memory Craft 6600 Professional and uses a high speed 1600P on her quilt frame.
Like many of the creative women we've featured lately, Kim's quilting business is a second career she pursued in order to find more time to be a mom. She was working as a civil engineer with one small child and a second one on the way, when she and her husband decided it was time for her to stay home.
Kim says, "Even when I was supposed to be working 32 hour week I was working around 40...it was just too much. I really wanted to see my kids grow. So, I decided to retire. Five days after I had my second child, I opened my etsy shop. I've enjoyed creating and selling my goods ever since then."
And for the first time, Kim had chance to fully pursue her love of quilting. She recalls making her first quilt at age five for her brother. She pieced it together using fabric from her mother's rag bin--including a fuzzy toilet seat cover.
She says, "I continued to play on my mom's sewing machine throughout high school. In college, I met my now husband and learned that his mom was a very talented quilter. We would go to her house on Tuesday nights and I'd get a quilting lesson and we'd get a free, delicious meal! It was definitely a win win!"
It was Kim's mother-in-law who inspired her to get her first Janome. At the time Kim's older machine needed replacing so she borrowed her mother-in-law's 6600P to take on a quilting retreat. It was love at first stitch. Before leaving the retreat she called her local dealer to order one for herslelf. "There was just no going back," she says.
She discovered the 1600P at a Quilting Expo in Chicago. She says that she'd been contemplating a long arm for awhile. "I tried out all the different long arms there and I just really liked the Janome 1600P. It really just 'fit' for me - not too pricey, not a lot of bells and whistles. I just wanted to do free motion on my art quilts so this seemed like the perfect solution."
But she didn't bring one home until the next year when one of her quilts made it into the Madison Quilt Expo. She says, "My family owns and operates an apple orchard so we never have time to go to the Expo. Well - since my quilt was on display my family gave me a few hours off." She went for the final hour of the expo so she could bring her quilt home. After seeing her quilt on display she went and purchased her 1600P and a quilt frame.
Kim then wondered if she was going to have room for it all. She called her husband to run it by him. He asked, "Do I need to build an addition?" She responded, "Nope, we just need to rearrange a bit ..."
