When It Comes To Janome Heritage Machines, Facebook Fans Like the MC8000 Best

PrintE-mail

This landmark embroidery machine is still a favorite among Janome owners.

611-for-heritage-machines-facebook-fans-like-the-mc8000-bestBack in December we asked our Facebook fans to tell us about their favorite Janome machine that's no longer made (we call these Heritage models).

As you might guess from our headline, the overwhelming favorite was the machine pictured to the right, the Memory Craft 8000. Most of our commenters said they were still using their 8000 and that it was still going strong--not that we're surprised.

The MC8000 caused quite a stir in the sewing world when Janome released it in 1990. It was the first home sewing machine that would allow you to do professional-style embroidery. For the first time you could just bring up a design on the screen, hoop up your fabric, and stitch it out. This really was amazing.

And it didn't even need a bulky embroidery attachment.

You could do multi-color embroidery designs. You could build a design library of Memory Cards. And with the Scan 'n Sew, you could scan any line art and turn it into a design.

The MC8000 was also the first of the three-in-one machines, where you could do sewing and quilting along with the embroidery. Switching between modes was as easy a choosing your function on the "ultra-modern" touchscreen. Its monogramming function was also very popular.

The Memory Craft 8000 was a best-seller and as Facebook demonstrates, there are many sewists still using theirs today.

Now, 22 years later, the 5th generation Horizon Memory Craft 12000 is Janome's top-of-the-line model. But this amazing sewing and embroidery machine would not have been possible to make without the breakthrough technology of the MC8000.

It truly is a Heritage machine.

New Accessory: Remote Thread Cutter Pedal

PrintE-mail

Cut your thread with a tap of your foot.

608-new-accessory-remote-thread-cutter-pedalStopping at the end of each seam to manually snip your threads can slow down the sewing process. So recently, sewing machines have come with improved "snipping" solutions.

First there was the thread cutter button. Then the programmable thread cutter. Now you can take your sewing efficiency to the next level by cutting your thread with a foot pedal.

The new Remote Thread Cutter Switch Unit is a secondary pedal that sits next to your foot controller. When you finish a seam, lift your foot off the sewing pedal and press it down on the cutting pedal to snip your thread. (It's as easy as driving an automatic.) Now cutting your threads couldn't be any easier. You don't even have to take your hands off your project--let alone hunt around for those thread snips.

It becomes a real time saver when you're doing a lot of smaller seams, like in quilting.

The Remote Thread Cutter Unit works with Janome machines that have a remote thread cutter port. Currently, the Horizon Memory Craft 8900 QCP and the high speed 1600P-QC.

Try out the new Remote Thread Cutter Switch Unit at your authorized Janome dealer.

Powered by Janome: Candace of Saltwater Quilts

PrintE-mail

This Texas blogger is a recent convert to the joys of machine quilting.

606-powered-by-janome-candace-of-saltwater-quiltsCandace Villarreal has been quilting since her teens, and using her Janome to make the quilt tops. But it's been only about a year since she discovered how much fun it could be to complete her whole quilt by machine.

Now a stay-at-home mom, she sells her original quilt designs on Etsy and posts her helpful tutorials on her blog Saltwater Quilts. And we're proud to say she does her work on three Janome machines.

Candace's mother taught her to sew. And her grandmother introduced her to quilting. Candace remembers visiting her grandmother and seeing her working on a beautiful quilt by hand. She immediately fell in love.

Of her grandmother she says, "She only hand pieces and hand quilts and is always working on a new project.  She taught me so much about quilting and started my obsession with quilts." Candace completed her first quilt at age 16. It was a large 96" x 96" quilt, made from the Road to Oklahoma pattern, that she machine pieced and hand quilted. She says that with its age it has become so soft and comfortable, it only makes her want to use it more.

Like many of the entrepreneurs we've feature on Powered By Janome, Candace had a corporate career before she started her quilting business. She worked in banking. "It wasn't my dream job," she says. "Quilting is my dream job."

Last year she started  her Saltwater Quilting blog, which gets its name from her girlhood home on Florida's Emerald Coast. She posts her bright, fresh quilts and related projects, along with lots of great ideas and tutorials.

One of the reasons Candace now loves machines quilting is because of her limited time. "I can accomplish so many more projects with machine quilting and I love the immediate gratification that comes from accomplishing a quilt in a short time," she says.  "Don't get me wrong, I love hand quilting and the special personal qualities that it adds to a quilt.  I always have a quilt sandwich sitting around that I can pick up and hand quilt when I get the chance."

She discovered Janome machines when her boyfriend (now her husband) bought her one for her birthday. What a guy! After researching machines, he chose the Janome Harmony 4052.

Candace says, "I immediately fell in love with how easy it was to use and I have never had any problems with it."  After using it for many years, she decided it was time to purchase a new and bigger machine.  She wanted one with a larger workspace that would make quilting and larger projects easier.  While visiting the Janome booth at the Houston Quilt Show she discovered--and  fell in love with--the Janome Horizon 7700.

She says, "My Horizon is just as easy to use as the Harmony, but it can do so much more and is such a workhorse!  It handles big projects without a hiccup.  I still use my Harmony when I am sewing away from home."

Her third  Janome is a MyLock 634D Serger.  She says that many sewers are intimidated by sergers, but it really is the easiest machine to use.  Threading is simple thanks to the step-by-step diagrams on the machine.  She really likes how the 634D adds such a neat and clean finish to any project.

Candace is currently planning a new slew of quilts and patterns for her online shop. But not a new brand of sewing machine. She says, "I have always owned Janome machines and plan on keeping it that way."

See her tutorials on her Saltwater Quilts blog, and browse her current patterns in her Etsy shop.

New Project: Milinda Stephenson's Easy Make-up Bag

PrintE-mail

This fully lined bag is easy to make.

605-project-easy-make-up-bagA great way to learn a new technique is to try it in a useful project. Milinda Stephenson has created instructions to show you an easy method for sewing a zipper into a lined bag.

You can make this with Beginner skills in about an hour. And you can use any Janome sewing machine. (You'll also need a Zipper Foot for your machine.)

This project uses a 9" zipper so it is the perfect size for a Make-Up bag, but you can easily modify the design to use a smaller zipper for a change purse, gift bag, or anything else you can think of.

Milinda says, "You can make this bag tiny enough for coins, or large enough for an ipad or laptop case. Just use a larger zipper and cut your fabric into larger rectangles!"

Artistic® Crystals Party in The Big Easy

PrintE-mail

603-artistic-crystals-mary-carollos-party-in-new-orleansBringing the bling to New Orleans.

The fleur-de-lis is the symbol of New Orleans. And it really looks great when you make it with rhinestones.

So it was only natural that it was one of the most popular designs at the Artistic Crystals party presented by Janome Educator Mary Carollo in the Big Easy.

After taking the ladies on a tour of the Artistic V6 software, she made sure everybody had a chance to put some bling on an item they'd brought. As you can see from the pictures below, everybody was having a good time.

alt

"Big Easy" is a great description of the process. The software makes it easy to do large designs that look terrific when you apply the rhinestones.

If you want a two minute explanation of how easy to is to do this with Artistic software, watch the video from an Artistic Crystals Party we had out on the West Coast.
