Powered By Janome: Fabric Artist Deborah Droog

Her amazing thread paintings will inspire you about what's possible with a sewing machine.

Whether her subjects are people, an abstract theme, or her amazingly realistic animals, Deborah's quilts are the kind that make you stop and take a second look. And we're proud to say she does her creative work on a Janome quilting machine.

Deborah was taught to sew at age 7 by the woman who oversaw the neighborhood playground. Deborah says, "She thought it would be one way to keep me inside and hopefully lessen my exposure to asthma attacks. She was right. By middleschool I was making my own clothes and staying inside during bad weather."

Blessed with a natural talent for art, Deborah pursued painting. In college she studied graphic, studio, and theater arts, eventually earning an MFA in Costume Design.

She first discovered quilting years later when a group of friends decided they would all make a crazy quilt together. Deborah says that shortly afterwards she was off and building her stash. She says, "I realized that fabric and thread created another medium for me." Soon afterwards she was painting with thread.

She discovered Janome after doing her own research into which was the best machine for the best price. After a few months of trying every quilting machine available, she says, "I discovered that Janome made the best machine on the market."

Deborah found Janome to be solid, sewed consistent stitches, and was within her budget. She says, "I was looking for a machine that could last me for many years, and had the ability to drop feed dogs. The added features were wonderful but not what sold me on Janome. Solid construction and the lack of cheap plastic sold me."

The model she chose was the Memory Craft 6600P quilting machine. Deborah says, "The 6600P is a work horse and will probably outlive me. It handles any kind of fabric and even layers of leather. I have not had any thread problems regardless of thread types. It allows me to lay layer after layer of thread on my thread art with no problems. Friends who come into my studio and somehow end up sewing on the 6600P love it and soon regret the machines they bought at twice or three times the price."

Deborah is still planning her next creative venture: designing whole cloth pieces, which would include painting and then thread painting. She says that the thread painting produces wonderful textural qualities that using paintand/or fabric alone cannot.

New Project From Jane Spolar: Sweet Summer Floral Wallhanging

Designer Jane Spolar has created a little quilt with lots of detail.

Using solids and tonal fabrics, you create the texture with stitching and thread. At the end you'll baste a pocket onto the back so you can slip in a piece of cardboard and display your creation on a table top easel.

The project requires intermediate quilting skills. And Jane estimates it will take you 1 - 3 days to complete, depending on your styling. Why rush the fun?

Happy 4th of July from Janome America

Today we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

738-happy-4th-of-july-from-janome-americaOn July 2nd, 1776 the Continental Congress voted independence from Great Britain. And, remarkably, it took them only two days of deliberation to come up with the final draft of their official declaration of that fact.

On the 4th of July, 1776 the new Congress signed the document that formally layed out the philosophical reasons for our secession and the list of grievances against King George III. Written by Thomas Jefferson, this Declaration of Independence is honored as the founding document of America.

John Adams, a founding father and our second President, was sure that July 2nd would be the day that everyone remembered and celebrated.

Adams wrote to his wife: "I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival." But it was the 4th that was commemorated.

We celebrate our independence on the day the Declaration of Independence was signed, because this document so eloquently sums up the heart of of American freedom in a single sentence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Let's remember this as we enjoy our parades, picnics, fireworks, and liberty.
