Stretch your sewing skills with this stylish yoga bag - perfect for toting your mat to and from class, and for storing it when you’re not using it. They also make great gifts for the health-conscious friend or family member, and it’s even better made out of organic cotton!
Janome Supplies Required:
MyStyle Sewing Machine
Satin Stitch foot F
Red Tip #14 needle
Fabric and Notions Required 1 ¼ yard fabric
9” - Zipper
1 yard Cord
Pre-wound bobbin - Black
All-purpose sewing thread to match fabric
1/8 yd - 1/4” grosgrain ribbon for ribbon pull (optional)

Cutting Instructions Cut one 30” x 20.75” piece of fabric for Bag body
Cut one 7” diameter circle of fabric for Bag Bottom
Cut one 7” x 9” – piece of fabric for Pocket
Cut one 7” x 3” piece of fabric for Pocket Flap
Cut one 30” x 3” piece of fabric for Strap
Sewing Instructions
(1/2” Seam Allowances included unless otherwise noted)
1. Insert #14 needle. Place all-purpose sewing thread in the needle and pre-wound
Black bobbin in the bobbin holder. Snap on Satin Stitch foot F.
2. Using a zig zag stitch, edge finish all pieces excluding the strap
3. Turn under ½” along each side of the pocket and press.
4. Turn under ½” along both short sides and one long side of pocket flap and press. Turn under ¾” on remaining long side and press.
5. Stitch zipper to pocket by butting folded edge of one short side of the pocket up to the teeth of the zipper. Stitch 1/8” from fold catching zipper tape.
6. Attach pocket flap by placing the folded edge that is turned up ¾” over the zipper making sure to line up the fold with the stitching on pocket. Stitch 5/8” from fold (zipper may need to be shortened at this point).
7. Pin completed pocket to the bag body, centering it appx. 9” from top. Edge stitch pocket to bag, using a straight stitch.
8. With right sides together stitch long edges of bag together stopping 3” below top. Press open.
9. Stitch seam allowance down on each side along the 3” opening.
10. To make cord casing turn under ½” around the top edge and press. Turn under again 1”, press and stitch close to edge.
11. To make strap, fold in half lengthwise with right sides together and stitch. Turn right side out and press. Stitch to bottom of bag centering one short end over the seam. Stitch again two more times to reinforce.
12. Attach bottom by turning bag inside out and pining bottom circle to bag right sides together. Stitch. Stitch again to reinforce.
13. Attach strap to the top of the bag by turning under the other short end 1½” twice. Stitch in a square just under the drawstring opening. Reinforce by stitching an X inside the square.
14. Using a safety pin or other tool, pass the cord through the drawstring casing and tie in a knot (you can also use a purchased cord stop).
Optional: Tie a small piece of ribbon to the zipper pull for ease of use.
