Need fast help. Before the new furniture arrives for spare room, I decided to try and organize my sewing room. Taking advantage of all that floor space to spread out fabrics, battings, etc was, I thought, a great idea. I had fabric stashed in all kinds of bags and boxes. Okay! I thought, easy! NOT! I have no idea on how to organize my treasure! Do I sort by color, type of fabric (garment, quilt, craft panels, etc.) Oh, and all my gadgets! Please keep in mind that I don't really have that much actual physical space, just all the space I imagined in my greedy , needy, got to have that stuff head of mine! I have a day and a half to work a miracle. Please, your ideas are important. Thanks to all for any ideas.

I took a drive to Victoria (Vancouver Island, BC) last week and visited Gala Fabrics. I felt as though I were in Ali Baba's cave. Gorgeous stuff. Silk tweeds which were just like fine wool, fine wool just like silk, every permutation of wool, silk and cotton fabrics you can think of. Specialty fabrics for raincoats etc.
No patterns or notions, just glorious bolts of fabric.

I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Didn't buy anything but I will be back.

This shop is just as good, if not better, than fabric shops I have visited in large cities.

I will be going back to Victoria fairly soon (to go to Lee Valley Tools) and will explore some other fabric shops. I will report back

Jacquie

I shut down my computer for a whole day and it's amazing what gets done when this lovely timewaster is not available. I went into my stash and dragged out a piece of very lightweight peacock blue silk which has a small flower head in gold metallic thread scattered over it. I made a very simple blouse with loose 3/4 sleeves and put contrasting piping in a green/blue shot silk around the scoop neckline. This will go with jeans or something nicer. I also found a nice lump of lemon yellow dupioni silk. I had previously made a long blouse/jacket with a mandarin collar. I had embroidered a large dragon on the back in combined polyester and metallic threads and a smaller dragon on the front. This was made to go with a pair of lemon yellow wool crepe pants. I usually wear a ribbed turtle-neck with this. I made a simple sleeveless shell from the leftover yellow silk and bound the neckline and armholes with a green silk which matches the green in the dragon embroidery. So I can now wear this outfit year round.

I found all sorts of lovely silks and woolens and am determined to start using the stuff up. I will make a point of wearing it even though I live in a hick town and will probably immediately be labeled as being a tourist!!!

I don't seem to have much in the way of cotton goods. I did see some l00% cotton eyelet (broiderie anglaise to you Maggie) in gorgeous strong colours like burnt orange which I am lusting after for a summer dress. Perhaps I can add some of this to my stash to replace the stuff I will be using up.

Remember ladies, whoever dies with the most fabric, wins!!!!!

Jacquie

I broke my own rule. Forum members are probably aware how I am always banging on about not putting time and effort into second-rate fabrics. There is a shop (The Trading Post) in the little town in which I now live which sells all sorts of stuff from men's work clothing, family shoes, rugs, curtains, notions, ladies underwear etc. Well you get the idea. It also had a fabric section. Most of the stuff was pretty grim (think Crimpelene!) but the odd bolt was not too bad. Anyway, the 90 year old owner decided to retire and sell off everything. I trotted in and bought a chunk of brushed denim. I made a sailor's smock. Loose fitting jacket-like thing, with 3/4 sleeves and a 2' wide stand up, stand-away colour. Along the bottom of the front is a 7" deep panel divided into 3 equal sections and stitched down to make "pockets". I embroidered a North American Indian design onto each section - whale, salmon and raven. I put it on my dummy to admire my handiwork. To my horror, there was discoloration down the centre of the front especially just below the collar. I did not notice it while cutting or sewing but it showed up in the bright light from the skylight above the dummy. As I intend to wear this outdoors and not become a trogdolyte, measures needed to be taken. I now have a bear embroidered across my chest. It hides a multitude of sins but I would have liked it better without the extra design.

The discoloration is from sitting on a bolt since pre-historic times and U.V. exposure.

From now on I will practise what I preach. There are bargains out there but the fabric must be opened up and checked in daylight.

Jacquie
