Manually making bar tack for buttonhole on JW5622 Manual Machine
Hello everyone,

I've given up on the automatic button-hole feature, because it sometimes works and sometimes utterly ruins my button-holes.

I have a dress to finish this week and can not take a chance on the automatic feature.

So I am going to zigzag the button hole - but I see that to bar-tack the ends some videos recommend "dropping the feed dogs." My machine doesn't have that option - I can't drop the feed dogs.

How can I make a bar tack without dropping the feed dogs?

This dress has about 20 or more buttons - hand sewing them will be my last option - I'm hoping I can at least manually sew them with the zigzag stitch with my machine.

The bar tack is my only sticking point. Help?

To do a bar tack without dropping the feed dogs, put your stitch length to "0" so that the machine stitches on the spot. Only sew about 3 or 4 stitches on each side so that you don't jam the machine. Do some trials on scraps of the fabric to see how this works.
