Ribbon and Sequin Foot Techniques

It's easy to attach rows of sequins and ribbon effortlessly with the ribbon /sequin foot available for all Janome top loading zig-zag machines.

Supplies Required:

  • Ribbon/Sequin foot
  • Janome monofilament thread
  • #11/75 Blue Tip needle
  • All purpose sewing thread
  • Ribbon
  • Sequins

Before sewing with the ribbon/sequin foot, make sure you have a full bobbin and top thread spool.

Applying Sequins:

  1. Use Janome monofilament thread in the needle, and thread to match fabric in the bobbin. Choose a zig-zag stitch and adjust stitch width to 7.0, and stitch length between 4.0~5.0. Insert row of sequins into white plastic guide so that the first sequin into guide is on top of the second one and so forth. (This will assure that successive sequins will be held in place as they are secured.)
  2. After sewing the row, gently pull fabric from side to side on both sides of row which will 'floss' the monofilament thread between each sequin to hide it.

Applying Ribbon:
To attach ribbon as a trim simply guide ribbon up to 7.6 mm wide through the white plastic guide for placement. Select a decorative stitch to attach and decorate the ribbon.

To create a 'casing' through which the ribbon can be pulled like a drawstring. Select the ladder stitch (H #6 on the Memory Craft 11000). This is especially nice for little girls' clothing at the waistline and sleeves, or for a drawstring bag. The width of this stitch can be altered to 7.0 to accommodate 1/4" ribbon. Simply feed the end of the ribbon into the guide, and adjust the width so that the needle doesn't penetrate the ribbon, but sews to each outside edge.

Contrasting thread, metallic thread or using a Janome wing needle adds interest and decorative touches when used with the ribbon/sequin foot.
