The Sewing Diaries - Week 4

Sewing Knits

Janome Canada Artisan Sherri Sylvester of Thread Riding Hood started a six-week blog series called The Sewing Diaries, where she has been posting one topic per week about her new machine, the Skyline S7. Last week, we featured her first three articles on getting started with the S7; using zippers and buttonholes and sewing with thick fabrics. This week, Sherri provided 12 helpful tips for sewing knits.

Sherri mentions that it is important to use ballpoint/jersey needles so that it doesn't cut tiny holes in your knits. If your machine has it, use a stretch stitch to allows your sewn seam to stretch with the knit you are sewing. If your machine doesn't have a stretch stitch, use a thin, long zigzag stitch or a triple stitch instead to allow the seam to stretch. In addition, Sherri recommends using the Janome AcuFeed Flex, Walking/Even Foot, twin needles and Overedge Foot.

Straight stitches are not usually recommended. It is important to use top stitching and edge stitching when sewing knits. Click here to read all of Sherri's helpful tips.
