Sewn With Love: Jerry Roberts' Heirloom Dress
She thought her granddaughter would let her make her one last "exquisite" dress.
Jerry Roberts loves heirloom sewing and loves to make dresses for her six year old granddaughter. For this creation she had to hunt down a twenty year old magazine cover and then order her lace from Europe. The result was this beautiful dress. Since retiring as a Fashion Merchandising teacher, Jerry has had more time to sew for her grandchildren, Mary (6) and Charlie (2 1/2).
For this heirloom dress she wanted to recreate a design that a friend had made more than 20 years ago. Jerry remembered that it been featured on the cover of a sewing magazine from the 1980s or 1990s. Digging through her old copies of "Sew Beautiful" she found it on the cover of the Winter 1991 issue. She says there was a page inside the magazine devoted to the dress.
Jerry says,"From that picture and some good advice from my friend, I ordered my lace and ribbon and began working as soon as it came in." The lace came all the way from the Netherlands.
The dress is made from robin’s egg blue batiste and ribbon, and ecru lace. The bodice, sleeves, and fancy band are made from alternating rows of 1” ribbon, 1” lace, and 1 ½” ribbon joined together with a simple zig-zag stitch. The lace at the dress and sleeve bottoms is a coordinating 2” lace. The skirt, fancy band, neck and sleeve edging are all attached to the dress with double entredeux. She also made a slip from the batiste that is trimmed with 1” coordinating lace edging pinstitched around the bottom with shell tucked neckline and arms.
In addition, Jerry made a matching suit for Mary's little brother to wear. They are two very lucky grandchildren to have a grandma who can sew like that.
We hope Jerry's dress and story inspire you to share your own Sewn With Love project. Find out how to submit it on our Sewn With Love page.
